Most garage door problems announce themselves before they strand you: a grinding sound, a door that lifts crooked, a remote that works only from three feet away. Repaired early, most of them are a part and an hour.

Symptoms and what usually causes them
- The door will not lift at all, and the opener strains. Usually a broken torsion spring. Do not force it — the door is now dead weight.
- The door lifts crooked or binds. Commonly a stretched or snapped cable on one side, or a roller out of its track.
- Loud grinding or popping. Worn rollers, dry bearings, or loose hardware working itself apart.
- The door reverses on the way down. Misaligned safety sensors, an obstruction in the track, or a travel limit that has drifted.
- A panel is bent or cracked. Sometimes a single-panel replacement, sometimes the point at which a new door is the cheaper answer.
What we do not recommend doing yourself
Torsion springs store enough energy to break bones. Cable replacement means releasing that tension in a controlled way. Rollers, sensor alignment and lubrication are reasonable homeowner jobs. Springs and cables are not.
