What Texas weather does to a garage door
San Antonio’s storm season runs roughly March through June, and it hits garage doors three ways. Hail dents panels and shatters cheap windows. Straight-line wind pushes on the largest opening in your house; if the door fails, pressure builds inside the garage and roofs come off. That’s not drama, it’s how a lot of Texas storm damage actually starts. Then, just to keep things interesting, a February freeze snaps weakened springs and freezes bottom seals to driveways.
The garage door is the weak point of the building envelope in high wind. An hour of prep each spring is the cheapest storm insurance you can buy.
The pre-season checklist
Do these in February or early March, before the first big system rolls through:
- Inspect the bottom seal and weatherstripping. Cracked or brittle seals let wind-driven rain in and rip when frozen. Replace before the season, not after.
- Test door balance. A door that won’t stay halfway up has a spring problem, and storms find weak springs.
- Tighten all hinge and track hardware. Wind vibration shakes loose fasteners the rest of the way.

Bracing and wind-rated doors
If your door is older or unbraced, a temporary vertical brace kit (mounted before a major storm) adds real strength for modest money. If you’re replacing a door anyway, wind-rated models from manufacturers like Clopay and Amarr carry reinforced struts and heavier track hardware designed for pressure loads.

What to check before you operate the door
Don’t hit the opener button the moment the storm passes. Walk the door first:
- Photograph any damage before touching anything. Dents, broken glass, bent track. Insurance wants documentation, and adjusters ask for it.
- Check the tracks for debris and bends. A twig in the track can pull a roller out and take the door off track.
- Look at the cables and springs. Look only. Storm-stressed hardware fails under tension, and that’s a pro inspection.
- Test manually first. Pull the release and lift by hand. Smooth and balanced means go. Heavy, gritty, or crooked means stop and call.
- Watch the first opener cycle. Stand clear and listen. New sounds after a storm mean something moved.
