The garage is a heat battery
In most of the country, garage door insulation is about keeping cold out. In San Antonio the fight runs the other way: keeping 100-degree heat from turning the garage into an oven that radiates into your house for hours after sunset. Sun hits the door all afternoon, the metal skin heats past 140 degrees, and if a bedroom or laundry room shares a wall with the garage, your AC fights that heat until midnight.
The garage door is the single largest uninsulated surface in most North Side homes. Three groups feel it hardest: anyone with living space above or beside the garage, anyone using the garage as a gym or workshop, and anyone storing batteries, paint, or tools that degrade in heat cycles.

R-value, explained honestly
R-value measures resistance to heat flow, and higher is better. Garage doors run from R-0 on a bare single-layer steel door up to about R-18 on premium triple-layer polyurethane. What the marketing leaves out: manufacturer R-values are measured at the center of a panel, not for the installed door. Panel joints, the track gap, and the perimeter seal all leak, so real-world performance sits lower.
Two more honest notes. The jump from R-0 to R-6 delivers most of the benefit; each step past that buys less in our climate. And insulation slows heat transfer, it does not refrigerate the space. A well-sealed insulated door keeps a garage 10 to 20 degrees cooler than outside on a brutal afternoon, which is the difference between unusable and usable.
Polystyrene vs polyurethane
Foam boards fitted between the steel skins, typically R-4 to R-10. Lighter and cheaper, with some flex and rattle because the panels sit loose in the frame.
Liquid foam injected between the skins, where it expands and bonds to the metal, typically R-9 to R-18. Denser, quieter, and noticeably stiffer, which also helps against dents and hail.

Will insulation make my garage cold?
No, and anyone who promises that is overselling. Insulation slows heat transfer in both directions, so the garage heats up slower and stays closer to the house temperature. It does not refrigerate the space. Pair the door with good weatherstripping and, if you work out there daily, a garage-rated mini-split does the actual cooling.
Can I add insulation to my existing garage door?
You can, with aftermarket foam panel kits, and it helps some. The honest limits: kits add weight the springs were not sized for, so the door may need a spring re-rate afterward, and retrofitted panels never seal or stiffen like a factory-bonded polyurethane door. If the door is due for replacement anyway, factory insulation is the better spend.
