How Do I Clean My Garage Door?

Simpler than you think
Wash your garage door with mild dish soap and warm water, using a soft brush or sponge, then rinse and dry it. Twice a year is enough for most doors. That is the whole job for 90 percent of doors.
What matters is what you do not use. No abrasive pads, no bleach-heavy mixes, no pressure washer on wood or older paint. The finish on a garage door is its rust and weather armor. Scrub through it and you have created a maintenance problem, not solved one.
Supplies and steps
- Supplies Bucket, mild dish soap, soft brush or sponge, garden hose, microfiber cloths. Car wax optional for steel.
- Wash Soap and water, top to bottom, both sides. The inside face collects cobwebs and dust that hold moisture.
- Rinse and dry Low-pressure hose rinse, then dry with cloths. Water left in panel joints feeds rust and mildew.
- Wax steel doors A coat of car wax once a year on the outside face. Real protection in Texas sun, especially on west-facing doors.
- While you are there Wipe the weather seals and check them for cracks. A seal swap is cheap.
Steel, wood, aluminum and glass
Steel: the soap routine plus annual wax. Touch up paint chips fast, since bare steel rusts quickly in our humidity.
Wood: soap and water only, soft brush, and never a pressure washer. Check the stain or paint every year. Sun and rain on a North Side door wear a wood finish faster than almost anywhere else on the house.
Aluminum and glass: same soap wash, and a standard glass cleaner on the lites. Aluminum will not rust, but its frame hardware still wants a wipe and a check.
San Antonio specifics
Spring here means a yellow coat of oak pollen on everything, and summer means dust that bakes onto hot panels. Both come off with the basic wash. Hard water spots from sprinklers need a 50-50 vinegar and water wipe before the soap pass.

Can you pressure wash a garage door?
Steel doors on a low setting, from a distance, yes, though soap and a hose do the same job with zero risk. Wood doors, no. A pressure washer drives water into the grain, strips stain, and can force water behind the panels of any door. If you pressure wash, keep the nozzle at least two feet out, use a wide fan tip, and never aim up into the panel joints or at the bottom seal.
How often should you clean a garage door?
Twice a year for a full wash, spring and fall. Add a quick rinse after heavy pollen season or a dust storm if the buildup bothers you. Doors near sprinklers or under trees may need a third wash. Cleaning day is also the right day to inspect the finish, the seals, and the hardware, since you are already looking at every panel up close.
What should you not use to clean a garage door?
Skip abrasive pads and scouring powders, which scratch the finish. Skip strong bleach mixes on the door face, which streak paint and attack the coating. Skip solvent cleaners on vinyl seals, which dry them out. And skip pressure washers on wood doors entirely. Mild dish soap handles normal dirt. Mildew spots come off with diluted white vinegar on a cloth.
How do you get hard water stains off a garage door?
Wipe the spots with a cloth soaked in a 50-50 mix of white vinegar and water, let it sit a minute, then wash with the normal soap routine and rinse. Sprinkler overspray is the usual cause, and the fix is aiming the sprinkler heads away from the door. Left for seasons, hard water etches into the finish and no cleaner fully removes it, so treat it early.
