A garage door is the largest single design element on most San Antonio street fronts, and the one homeowners look at least when choosing it. It is also a structural install: the opening is measured, the old door and hardware come out, and the new door is fitted, balanced and tested.

What the choice actually comes down to

• Material. Steel is the default in this market: durable, low maintenance, and it takes the Texas sun well. Wood looks better and asks for more upkeep. Composite splits the difference.

• Style. Traditional raised panel, flush modern, or carriage house. The door should agree with the house rather than compete with it.

The install itself

The opening is measured for width, height, headroom and side room before anything is ordered — a door that does not fit the headroom needs different hardware, and that is better known at the quote than on install day. The old door and tracks come out, the new sections and tracks go in, springs are sized to the finished door weight, and the door is balanced by hand before the opener is reconnected.
